Subject: Mirage F1 vs F-8P

Mirage F1 vs F-8P. OK, which one is better dog fighter? They have almost identical wing design: ~40 deg swept, tapperzoid and dogteeth. They have similar elevator design. F-8P has two ventral fins and Mirage has only one. The Mirage has larger and probably better vertical stabilizer. F-8P is larger and heavier, but both has similar thrust-to-weight ratio. The French must have known this long time ago. Which one is the better dog fighter? As for which one is better fighter-bomber, Mirage F1 is certainly the winner.

Ventral fins are used to supplement the vertical stabilizer in providing lateral stability.  So in that sense the two designs probably work out about the same.

As far as which is the better dog fighter, it would be shocking if the French hadn't figured that out a long time ago.  Although, the F-8E(FN) and F-8P pilots were pretty much experts in WVR tactics, so I would tend to give them the edge.

Most likely come down to which aircraft has the better pilot.
