Subject: F-35 vs. Eurofighter
IAFbestinworld    8/13/2004 11:49:07 PM
Lockheed says that besides the f-22, the f-35 will be the best air to air fighter in the future, is this true? Could an f-35 take a Eurofighter? My opinion says yes since f-35 contains more stealthy characteristics.

"Eurofighter is a fifth-generation combat aircraft with fully digital, integrated aircraft, avionics and weapon systems." http://www.armedforces.co.uk/raf/listings/l0028.html Considering your source has not been updated since 2000...

"combat aircraft with fully digital, integrated aircraft, avionics and weapon systems." then the super hornet would be considered 5th gen, but it's not. (You are forgetting the EF CAN supercruise, however.) The Eurofighter lacks 2 major things to be a 5th gen fighter, and that would be: 1. Stealth, i don't need to even elaborate 2. The F-22 has a complete picture of the battlespace, and a data-link, between otehr F-22's, something the Eurofighter does not have.

“"combat aircraft with fully digital, integrated aircraft, avionics and weapon systems." then the super hornet would be considered 5th gen, but it's not. (You are forgetting the EF CAN supercruise, however.)” Please explain this, that was a quote taken from a website that I provided a link to, I did not say that integrated systems defined a fifth generation combat aircraft you have to read the link I provided in full, that excerpt was taken out of context. Stealth is not the defining feature of a 5th generation fighter, it is component however, and the E/F2000 has the best RCS reduction features out there after the JSF F-35 and F-22 and is considerably better than the F-18 Family if you would but read my links. The E/F2000 has the MIDS high capacity digital information distribution system that will present a comprehensive tactical environment on the MHDDs, relieving the pilot of the need to assemble the necessary information from a large number of independent sources. On RAF jets, it is also connected to UK ASACS and several Link JTIDS systems. http://www.raf.mod.uk/equipment/other.html

How do you now how stealthy the Typhoon is? If you could tell how stealthy a plane is just by looking at it then it would be easy to make every plane stealthy. But you CAN'T tell just by looking its a lot mor complicated than that, so just because it doesn't look like F-117/22/35's doesn't mean its not.

True, however, the difference in RCS between the Super Hornet and Eurofighter are so small , it doesn't matter, as i stated earlier. The Super Hornet and Eurofighter are both 4.5 gen aircraft and are very evenly matched.

"True, however, the difference in RCS between the Super Hornet and Eurofighter are so small , it doesn't matter, as i stated earlier." No it doesn’t, the link I provided states that the Typhoon has 75% RCS features compared to the F-22 and the F-18 family only has 60% by comparison. http://www.eurofighter.starstreak.net/Eurofighter/tech.html The Typhoon is a fifth generation fighter by timescale and capability. The F-18 family is a fourth generation fighter. I have never heard of the 4.5 Generation scale before but it is the same as what I would consider a fourth generation fighter according to your link so we’ll take it as the 4.5 Generation.

The Eurofighter is not a fifth generation aircraft, it is not on the same level as an F35 or an F-22.
