Subject: Blackhawk Down

I saw this the other night and I have to say it is excellent, lines up very nicely with the book. Did anyone catch anything that was totally off? I didn't except that some of the American Rangers had very faint english accents, otherwise it was pretty solid.

Phoenix Rising    RE:Blackhawk Down   1/21/2002 11:57:01 PM
I haven't seen it yet myself, but two ex-Rangers who were on the ground in 1993 and survived were on Fox News tonight and had nothing but good words to say about it, with the one exception of someone they said had been turned into comic relief who was much more serious in real life. --Phoenix Rising

someone they said had been turned into comic relief who was much more serious in real life..... Probably Nelson or Twombly. In the book they seem llike a double act.

I saw it, it was excellent. I did catch a major error however - Their names were written on their helmets. That practice has been discontinued for decades.

And at one point in the movie you can clearly see the blank rounds in one of the M-249's. But that's all I saw and I was looking. In my top 5 movies of all time list.

The reason that their names were written on the helmets was so that the audience would be able to tell who was who. The director said that when the actors were "kitted up" they were indistinguishable from one another. That's the only reason for the inaccuracy.

Tommy, The socialists hate anything and everything that shows the US and/or the US military in a good light AND anything and everything that show its opponents in a bad light. No matter what the circumstances are.

Heheh look like no socialists have taken up the challenge ... I havent seen it yet, its not out over here (Australia). Im sure it wont be on my top anything movies of all time though, ill watch it then forget it. Any movie Jerry Bruckheimer fronts is ... forgettable :) (Witness the farce that was Pearl Harbor) Ridley Scott or no, whose best work is still Alien.

There has got to be a Socialist out there who wants to slag off this film as a portrayal of "joe sixpack" putting in his imperialist boot. Come on Mallers,Cheif,Cool,Andy from beaverton,Where are you?The Red cause needs your support!

BHD is no Pearl Harbor. It's far more realistic, and on my top ten.

Tommy, I just retired and we still put out name on our lids (and a few of us put other stuff on there too, like 'born to kill' etc!) but it went on the elastic strap that holds the camo cover on. We'd write in indelible ink, or have it embroidered on; and the reason wasn't for ID of soldiers, but equipment! One skid-lid looks like just about any other - you use the rank on the front, and if it's your rank, you check the back for the name to make sure it's not some other ____ (fill in the blank with your rank!) To the best of my knowledge, at least in support units, this is still practice - though the kit I've seen recently in an infantry divisions is similar and for reasons stated above. Having said that, I have NOT seen this movie yet, and will quite possibly die of anticipation if I don't see it soon - I thought the book was fantastic. Can't help you on the socialista issue. Keep your eyes open; malrunt, chiefool, the un-truth - someone will crawl back out from under their rock and post some ludicrous drivel about it to slag it off! E

There was great hype on that movie and even though I don´t like those over-patriotic films (excluding the Braveheart that is simply great) I just "had" to watch it. I´d say that it was quite good- no way to reach into my TOP 10- but still quite good. It showed the ugly and mean side of war but there was a big big problem- it was too Black & White. It looked like a propaganda film, dehumanization of Somali people. But it was excellent when comparing to crappy Pearl Harbour and some other recent WWII movies.. At the same level as that Saving Private Ryan (not sure if this is correct English name). I guess that I´ll forget it soon, nothing really special- I like Platoon and Bridge of Kwai-river (not sure of name) much more.. though I can understand how Americans get kicks from that movie- I get kicks from finnish Winterwar even though I do know that it isnt SO good movie- nationalism (I like it more than patriotism) is weird thing.. somehow when we see "our own guys" on the screen it gives certain feeling and atmosphere.

I know its late to reply to this, but I thought the movie depicted the US government and military commanders in fine manner, I guess no shallow thinkers would see the subliminal messages in the film. Leave no man behind.

Someone please correct my memory here if i'm wrong - never leave a man behind is Ranger tradition isn't it? I don't know about the movies undertones, and if it portrays THAT administration in a good light, then it's simply leftwing propaganda allright. The leadership? They were hamstrung by what the administration told them they could take - no tanks. (flashbacks to viet nam with the president making the call on TARGETs!) I think they made a bad choice to attempt the same thing as they had done (5 times?) previously AGAIN, and in broad daylight. I STILL have to see this movie! E.
