While there is a back and forth debate in the west about whether or not we are in a "Clash of civilizations", it seems that Northeast Africa is now an arc of conflict ranging from Chad, through Sudan to Ethopia and Somalia, and potentially spreading to the Central African Republic and Kenya.
While the news media reports these as seperate events in seperate nations, the conflicts have several themes in common:
1. Islamic groups versus Animist/Christian (Sudan<->SPLA, Chad<-> Sudan, Somalia<->Ethipia.
2. Long-term cultural grievances- example- Arab slavery on non-arabs.
Could this be a true "clash of civilizations" in the making" And if so how does it or should it affect US policy in the region.
