Subject: Possible Action in Somalia
Robert996@excite.com    1/24/2002 5:35:12 PM
A U.S. defense offical was quoted as saying military action would be taken "in a matter of weeks not months" if al-Qaeda suspects were not handed over.
Reportedly troops are being ordered to read Blackhawk Down so that they'll know how NOT to conduct a battle in Somalia.
Add that to the recent buildups in German and U.S. naval presence in the area and our shipment of Arms to the friendlys over there and I'd be willing to put money on Somalia being the next target of the Terror War, that is if they decide not to turn over any terrorists.

I agree with your prediction, Somalia is probably next. I am curious however, as to whether the U.S. could launch air strikes/limited ground operations in both Somalia and Iraq, at the same time. It would be difficult because of the current state of affairs in the military (weapons shortages, lack of manpower to some extent), but I feel that if we don't hit Iraq soon, public support for an attack may wane.

We're very short of stand-off precision weapons, thanks to the Clinton military and budget decisions. We're trying to rebuild the stockpiles, now. Part of the new Bush budget proposal deals with this, btw.. OTOH, we wouldn't need this sort of thing in Somalia, where there isn't any air defense net to speak of. Just some shoulder fired missiles. But, we'd want a goodly number to take on Iraq, which is a FAR more target rich environment than Afghanistan was, in almost ever respect.
