Subject: Channel 4 Documentary on Afghanistan...
Soylent Green    5/31/2003 6:21:39 PM
Worrying documentary on Afghanistan tonight by Peter Oborne, the political editor of the Spectator. Things aren't looking too good out there, on a variety of fronts? Basic gist is - the policies are no good, the money isn't coming through and everyone in the West has basically forgotten all about it (perhaps shown by the fact that aside from this nobody has posted on Afghanistan in over 2 months)Anyone see it? Fairly worrying and none of us came out of it smelling like roses frankly.

Final Historian    RE:Channel 4 Documentary on Afghanistan...   5/31/2003 10:50:39 PM
Iraq has been occupying too much attention. Hopefully now that hostilities are over more attention can be focused on Afghanistan's problems, so that it doesn't become a situation where troops have to be sent again in a couple of years.

I think Iraq will be the sexier reconstruction story because most of the infrastructure is still intact, where most of Afghanistan didn't have an infrastructure to begin with, and Iraq has a valuable export commodity to pay for reconstruction costs.

Not to mention that most of the First World is much more politically and economically interested in Iraq than Afghanistan. On the other hand, had we not gone into Iraq, the attention very well might also have focused on Afghanistan in bad ways; constant media scrutiny isn't always the most productive thing for a government just trying to get its feet under it. America was insulated by 3,000 miles of ocean in the days when that meant something during the time when we were experimenting to find out what would work for us; and let's not forget that our first try was a pretty lame excuse for a democracy (the Articles of Confederation) that would have likely seen us go the way of the Weimar Republic had we been too thick-skulled to admit we'd made a mistake and insisted on pressing on with it until the system collapsed. The question is going to be one of will, primarily, in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Just as the stiffest (relatively speaking) resistance was always at the start of both of the wars, the greatest challenges of unification and [re]construction are all lined up for us at the beginning, but if we get through the choppy waters at the outset (which admittedly may take years), we'll be all right, and this "resurgence" people are talking about now will only be a blip on the radar of history. --Phoenix Rising

Unlike previous wars in Afghanistan in this war most Afghanis support the outside force (US and Coalition). So Phoenix Rising is right - This is a contest of Will. Despite the difficulty of long term reconstruction in Afghanistan the casualties should remain low. Hopefully this will keep the naysayers muted and allow others to do what needs to be deone.

Greytraveller hopes that >>this will keep the naysayers muted and allow others to do what needs to be done.<< Ideally this would be the case, but a few more killed in action over there, will bring on crys of "another veitnam" from the sensationalist press. If anyone doubts the presses ability to cause mass indignation from the ignorant, check out the Daily Mirrors campaign against war in iraq.

PR, did you get the opportunity to watch the documentary? Lemme see if I can remember the channels - BBC1, BBC2, ITV, and Ch 4. ??? (hey, it's been a few years and the ones I spent there were PURE braincell disconnecting party years!) And of course, SKY T.V. Did you see it? Was it on target? was it worth watching? or were you off tut pub? E.

Channel five?!? Amazing! (but you know, if you've ever been to the states, your 4 (5!) channels usually have more on that's worth watching that the 130+ channels on my cable! :o) And, if it's the Beeb, there's no commercials! (I used to love/hate that! No commercials means 1. you get to watch the show start to finish with no interruptions, other than the phone. 2. you have to sit through the whole show with no bathroom breaks. hope it ain't a long one and you're not drinking!) Thanks SG. E.

Yeah no adverts, but the quality has gone downhill recently. Channel 5 is rubbish so don't worry you haven't missed anything. ;)

LoL! Thanks again bud. What do you mean rubbish, I mean, re-runs? old shows that never made it? I have to admit I have (at least for an American) an odd sense of humor - I enjoyed Red Dwarf, Blackadder (all!) ???One foot in the Grave???? I think that was the one... And all the documentaries. oh man. the nature documentaries were fantastic, the history... ahh... THAT I miss a great deal. ours is seriously edited, pc-ed up, adverts tossed in, etc. oh well. I have other hobbies now, no time for telle! E.

Yeah blackadder, One Foot in the Grave etc are classics. Channel 5 mostly shows crappy game shows, reality TV, documentaries about holiday reps and occassionally lte night very-soft porn. It's generally really bad, lowest-common-denominator stuff. Let's put it this way - Channel 4 buys in Frasier and Friends, the BBC buys in 24, Channel 5 buys in Xena; Warrior Princess...
