Subject: NGI, you guys still have Wiesels?
SGTObvious    6/12/2003 8:05:58 PM
I remember them! in the early 80's, they were tested at Ft. Lewis, Washington as part of the US Army's attempts find a good "light" armored vehicle, along with the Brit Scorpion, a wheeled Canadian thing, and the Commando V-??? (I forget which model. We also had something just like it by another company called the Dragoon, and the durn things were so identical it was annoying. The result was the Army didn't like ANY of them, but I digress)

I really like the Wiesel! It was, well, Cute! I had an old Chevy Vega at the time that was actually bigger and LOUDER than the Wiesel. The Wiesel is so small that a Marder (Have you still got them?) could carry one as a "spare" in case the Marder breaks down. Small? Did I say a Wiesel was small? It was the only armored vehicle I ever saw with CAUTION- TWO MAN LIFT stencilled on the bumper. How do you get a Wiesel across an obstacle? Get out of the Wiesel, pick it up, and carry it across. They were so much fun!

Spent Case    RE:NGI, you guys still have Wiesels?   6/13/2003 5:32:12 AM
If you've ever seen the movie "A Bridge Too Far", I think at least one was used in the scene where the Germans were first trying to storm the bridge with armored vehicles. It may have been dressed up like a Marder (the WWII one), but if you look at the suspension, it sure looks like the Wiesel.

Nasty German Idiot    RE:NGI, you guys still have Wiesels?   6/13/2003 6:30:13 AM
Yeah the German Army still have this, Just recently a lot of new Wiesel-2 vehicles were bought, and new versions are in Developement. The Troops like them because they provide good protection against Guns but with a TOW and an MG-42/3 they have some firepower. 2 of them can be Transported in a CH-53. Here are some pictures, this is a recent one from Afghanistan: link Wiesel-1 Machinegun: link link link Here is one of the Wiesel 2, which is also unsed as a light anti-aircraft "tank" : link It uses Stinger missiles: link The Hospital version: link Inside: link There is also one as a Pioneer explorer version: link This one is new, Wiesel with Mortar System: link You see it can be unsed for many things, and can be transported very easy but provide high mobility.
