Subject: Operation Gala-e Gorg: new Afghan-German-Belgian joint offensive in Kunduz
Nasty German Idiot     1/29/2010 10:00:05 AM
In a nutshell: about 600 coalition troops, of which roughly 500 are Germans infantrymen, have started another advance into the rebellious Chahar Dara district of Kunduz province. Belgian mentors seem to participate as well. The operation is dubbed "Gala-e Gorg". The declared objective is to regain freedom of movement for coalition troops and to set up "a number of checkpoints" in the area. Incoming breaking news describe the fighting as "intense", one German trooper has been seriously wounded in action already. Rumor is spread in German forums that a number of Taliban have been killed. The operation is commanded by German Colonels Kai Rohrschneider and Michael Matz. 1 German WIA so far, unknown number of enemy casualties. I will try to update and post information about the Operation as it comes in. Have a cold and its weekend anyway.

At Hill 431: Combat mission in Kunduz

Hill 431 is the name the soldiers have given to a hilltop in the northern Afghan Char Darah District where the German Army has installed an outpost. Nothing here reminds of troops who drill wells and build bridges in the Hindukush region. Germany is at war here, at least that is what the troops think, although the politicians do not want to speak that out clearly.

Newly excavated trenches cross the hilltop. The soldiers man heavy machine guns, snipers scan the environment for threats. Everybody here has already been in combat against the Taliban. The soldiers were sent to this inhospitable area of Kunduz province by the German Parliament - now many of them feel let down by their homeland.

At early noon a platoon of infantry forces waits in the Kunduz camp to relieve the comrades of the Quick Reaction Force on Hill 431. The soldiers make jokes, some smoke a cigarette before the convoy leaves. The battle-tested men will spend the coming days outside of the walls of their camp. The German Army does not want to repeat the mistakes of the past. The soldiers are not supposed to go into short missions, return and let the Taliban regain the territory by default.

"The basic principle of our tactics is that we will only go in if we and the Afghan forces can stay out there", says Colonel Kai Rohrschneider, the commanding officer of the Provincial Reconstruction Team. He hopes for another infantry company. German and Afghan forces had entered Char Darah last summer for Operation "Eagle". They battled the Taliban in serious engagements and withdrew after a couple of days. The Taliban returned. Rumor has spread the self-proclaimed holy warriors would have created death lists with the names of Afghans who "collaborated" with foreigners.

This freezing day's reinforcements for Hill 431 are ready for marching off the camp. A non-commissioned officer briefs the troops before they leave. "The situation is unimproved", the warnings of roadside bombs are still "valid". There are tip-offs that insurgents have converted three vehicles into rolling bombs, one of them with up to 600 pounds of explosives. "Elbe" and "Danube" are the callsigns the German Army has given to waypoints on the route to Char Darah which the convoy of Dingo and Fuchs armoured personnel carriers will use.

The soldiers wear body armour. Gloves are supposed to protect against burns, protective goggles are worn to prevent blindness. Earplugs protect the eardrum from perforation in case of rocket propelled grenade attacks. The Taliban are not impressed by the Germans' supremacy, a soldier says with a mix of admiration and disgust. The insurgents regularly attack without cover and fire until the Germans kill them. Another soldier says the insurgents are "quite resourceful and motivated".

Petty Officer 1st Class Holger - only his given name may be publicized - is a Dingo driver. He starts the engine and advises all to take their helmets off. The shock wave could throw the occupants against the roof if a roadside bomb struck the vehicle. A helmet could break someone's neck then. "And if we are attacked so badly that we need helmets inside of our vehicles, we have different things to worry about anyway" says the 38-years old. He laughs. Holger says he likes his job, he has also tried more smooth positions within the German Army but he liked none.

The convoy leaves and crosses the southern quarter of Kunduz and then marchs into Char Darah. Children wave, just like it was a few years ago when Kunduz was one of the most peaceful provinces in Afghanistan. Some boys form a triangle with their fingers like they would play volleyball. The Germans comped volleyballs recently, now these boys want some too. Suddenly one of the vehicles reports an Afghan with a cellphone on the other side of the road. The Taliban have created a network of "spotters" who report the German movements. The soldiers cannot do anything about it - the Afghan could just as well call a friend.

Holger has been stationed in Kunduz since November, he served an earlier tour there last year. "Of course the situation is worse" he says. "During my first tour we could easily enter every village in this district, and we did. Nowadays our freedom of movement is seriously restricted". He is not afraid, Holger says. "I have a healthy grade of tenseness, I am wide-awake and focused on my work. We have been in gunbattles here. You are just doing your job and do not think about what is happening."

"Of course" he thinks his mission would make a sense, says Holger. "Otherwise I would not be here". As for the debate at home where a majority of the people want a quick withdrawal from the Hindukush, H

Some news about the state of Operation Wolfpack:

In January 2010, each the United States and Germany decided to increase their efforts in Kunduz by about 6,000 troops and civil personnel [35]. After a succesful advance into Chahar Dara in late December, another suchlike operation was started on January 28. Operation Gala-e Gorg (Operation Wolf Pack) included almost 500 German and about 120 Afghan troops and aimed at the installation of further outposts in the rebellious district. One German soldier was wounded and nine insurgents killed in intense fighting [36].

German troops faced a very serious situation when insurgents they chased hid in a crowd of local villagers on February 5. One insurgent was killed and another wounded but so were two civilians caught in the crossfire [37]. On February 9, an Afghan night patrol mistook German soldier for insurgents and opened fire on them. Luckily no one was hurt in this incident. Further contacts encountered during the following days: One February 16, US special forces killed one insurgent and detained two others while pursuing a Taliban commander [38]. On February 17, six insurgents were killed in clashes with German troops.

Again heavy fighting around Kunduz, 3 US soldiers wounded in action.

Three US troops hurt in fierce fighting

KUNDUZ (AIP): Three US commandos sustained injures during fighting with Taliban in Chahar Dara district of northern Kunduz province, governor said Thursday. Governor Muhammad Omer told Afghan Islamic Press that two armored vehicles were also damaged. Earlier, he said that foreign and Afghan forces were engaged in fierce fighting with Taliban in the said area. ?A pitched battle is going on between Taliban and combined forces.? Kunduz Governor Muhammad Omer said. Mehboobullah Saeedi, governor?s spokesman, however, claimed that several Taliban were killed during the firefight Saeedi expressed ignorance about the claim of Taliban that three armored vehicles belonging to foreign forces were destroyed in the combat. A spokesman of German troops in Kunduz also spurned the claim of Taliban that a vehicle was destroyed in Chahar Dara district. The spokesman said: ?No vehicle has been destroyed in Chahar Dara.? Abdul Wahid Omerkhel, chief of Chahar Dara district also told AIP that furious clashes were taking place at Nehr-e-Sofi area in the said district. ?Fighting is still going on in the area but we do not have reports of casualties?, he maintained. Thought there has been no word from the authorities about air raids but NATO warplanes were seen hovering over the battlefield. Taliban?s mouthpiece Zabihullah Mujahid while talking to AIP by telephone claimed that three vehicles of foreign forces were destroyed in Chahar Dara today. He asserted that that all soldiers, onboard, were killed. There has been no word from foreign forces about the skirmishes. Two days ago, local authorities said that a Taliban commander, Syed Murad parted ways with Taliban and joined the government along with his 25 fighters. A day later, the officials said that the ?estranged? commander was injured in Taliban attack. A few days ago, Kunduz Governor Muhammad Omer expressed concern over the prevailing security situation in the province. He had called upon the Taliban to lay down their weapons; otherwise a major operation would be launched against them in Kunduz. Kunduz lies in northern Afghanistan far away from the borders of Pakistan and Iran. It is said to be the most troubled province in the north. Observers are of the opinion that those countries which are opposed to the presence of foreign forces in Afghanistan are trying to create disturbance in Kunduz and in neighboring Baghlan province so that the US and its allies could not be able to bring equipments and supplies via Central Asians countries.
