Softwar    2/25/2008 8:57:34 AM
Improvements Planned for Chinese Fighter Aviation Week & Space Technology 02/25/2008 , page 45 Chengdu Aircraft may institute limited measures to reduce radar reflections from its FC-1 export fighter as the Chinese air force considers introducing the type into home service. The initial version will finish development late this year or early next year, according to Catic, China’s state company responsible for international sales of the aircraft, which Pakistan has helped to develop and will co-produce. More air-to-ground capability is also planned for what is now mainly an air-to-air fighter. The aircraft, in the weight class of the Saab Gripen and Mirage III, is powered by a Klimov RD-93, the engine used in the Russian MiG-29. Catic says Egypt is evaluating it and, according to one media report, Azerbaijan has expressed an interest in the aircraft. Pakistan plans to buy 150.

Russians really hit their own toes when they sell RD-93 to commies. Now nobody wants MiG-29 anymore. FC-1 is cheaper, newer and made in China, which translate to business as usual when foreign buyers can get rebate back to their own pocket.

I have to wonder whether the Russians really believe their own propaganda about the US being their enemy and China being their friend. How can these people be so stupid? Given China's irredentist views and the size of its economy relative to Russia's, it's only a matter of time before China reaches strategic (nuclear) parity with Russia. And then the shoving matches over Russia's Far Eastern holdings will begin.

I be there's somebody over at the MiG Bureau, as well as Sukhoi, looking back at their old single engine designs like the Project 33 and the S-55 and wondering whether or not they'd be price competitive with anything coming out of the PRC.

by cutting the crash rate.  `100% improvement means only one crash every other month instead of one crash a month that seems to be the current norm.
