We have  been reliably foolish in underestimating the abilities of our opponents.  The Taliban are just a bunch of fanatic shepherds, the Somalis a bunch of subsistance fisherman and the North African jihadists a bunch of malnourished bedouins. 
 
And yet with basic electronic hardware and off the shelf software, combined with nimble battlefield tactics, they give the West all it can handle.

You forgot a suicidal willingness to sustain casualties. Compare the ratio of dead and wounded in Somalia. Then factor in that the Taliban’s most effective weapon is the suicide bomber.
