Subject: Russian SAM reputation
mabie    8/1/2009 10:07:52 AM
The Russians are perceived to be world leaders in SAM technology. Their missiles took a heavy toll of aircraft over Viet Nam and in the Yom Kippur War so the reputation was probably well deserved. Now there are new generations of Russian SAMs but sophisticated tech has evolved just as quickly to defeat them. So do the Russian SAMs still live up to their fearsome reputation, in particular the S-300 family?

Yes.  The S-300 can kill anything it gets in its "sights."  Thankfully, we've developed the means to take apart an IADS build around the S-300.  We must still respect its potential, but can deal with it.  Lesser countries do not have the wherewithall to build a military like ours, and their best bet is to just not fly into its MEZ.
