Subject: Anti-radiation SAM?
Galderio    7/5/2004 9:42:19 AM
Sorry, my poor english!! Is that true the Chinese have some anti-AWACs SAMs.The atg Harm missiles seens to work very well. In the second Gulf War an F-16 destroyed a friendly Patriot Radar with only one Harm missile. The multi million dollars system was put out of action very easy. Is it possible to do the same with AWACs? OK, IF you turn off the radar the missile will loose but, you won´t know if it is coming to your direction or not and then, when you turn on the your radar again the missile seeker will find you again. Several missiles may take a radar off too long to do your mission. If the chinese or the Russian have such systens how could it changes american´s air dominace tatics? Do you believe that it is an eficient type weapon?

The F16 was very close (relatively) to the Patroit system. It a fighter is THAT close to a AWACS you're screwed anyways. Ofcourse it's very possible to get a bigger ARM missle to do the mission your suggesting. But distance, altitude, speed, ECM, and fighter cover are some of the obstacles you'd have to overcome. Futhermore, if there are 2 or more AWACS in the area they can switch on and off while the other one is doing the opposite. Leaving 1 AWACS operational all the time.

The modern integrated concept of assembling information from all sources allow you to turn threatned radars off.

Yes, I agree that will be nearly impossible to hit an AWACS hundreds of miles away. But if you have 2 or more AWACS in the same mission they will probably be far away from each other and they may not cover the exact same area or the same priorits(and they have a big but limited number of targets). Our question is. How switching the radars on and off could degrade their aircombat capabilities (I think that is the chineses main objective). Turn the system on and off many times can make you loose a lot of information that will require precious seconds to be recuperated or atualized.I do agree , that ECM will play an important role but, AWACS are too expensive to trust on something that is not 100% safe.I would like to know if you think it is a good weapon? is it true that this ARM SAM really exist? and if you have more information about this. If you don´t, You can find it((general informations)) on many chinese defense websites.

I suspect you're taking about the FT-2000, which may soon become operational in Chinese air defenses. It does not have the range to hit an AWACS in a typical scenario. Displacedjim
