China's territorial expansionist ambitions need to be discouraged early.  A coalition of several countries that support Filipino sovereignty in these waters should be there to give the PLA Navy a smack in the mouth.  We need to do that now, before the Chinese military-industrial complex grows bigger.

Let's see, now...The Philippine government wanted us to leave in 1992, so we closed Clark AFB and US Naval Station Subic Bay. (Ah, Subic!!!) Now, they're in a Pi**ing Contest with the PRC, and they want our help??? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.......................................................

Is it that China just wants the disputed territories, or it is a beginning of something larger than that ? A first step of some larger scale invasion ? There are plenty of similar examples in history.

This is just the beginning. China is going to bite off as much as the world lets it. The nations in SE Asia need to present a united front on this, and not let China win by creeping imperialism. I'm astonished that no nation has made a compaint to the UN about China disregarding international law.  This is 1938 all over again.

I think that united front is not going to happen. From what I've heard east Asian nations do not like each other very much. There was an American effort back in 20th century called SEATO but it never really worked, I believe.

I think Chinese know that.

China clearly believes that it not recieving the level of international influence and respect it's economic and military power entitles it to.  Just as the newly unified German Empire fought a series of short victorious wars in the 19th Century before finally being engulfed in the catastrophes of the two World Wars, the history of the 21st Centiry will be dominated by the rise and ultimately apocalyptic fall of the Chinese Empire.  Truly,  we live in interesting times.

We live in "integrated" times. World is much more integrated than before. War with China would cost everyone a lot, and everyone includes China itself. I don't expect major escalation, but I can't figure out how far is this going to go.

Any local conflict could escalate because the legitimacy of the CCP's rule, and the legitimacy of the PLA as the protector of the CCP and Chinese territory, rest on not losing any conflict.
