So why can't China have a Monroe doctrine of their own? It's their back yard, they are the 800 lb gorilla. Render unto China what is China's. Oh, and Phillipines - you made your bed when you kicked our asses to the curb in '92. Now deal with it. As far as US interests are concerned, as long as sea lanes remain open, which they will be cause the Chinese economy is rather dependent on Walmart et al buying their manufacturing output it would possibly destabilize China proper if trade is disrupted for a protracted time.

I think the concern is that the Chinese policy might end up being more lebensraum and not so much Monroe. But I'm with you on how miraculously the U.S. suddenly becomes welcome... When a stronger neighbor starts flexing their muscles..
