PHOENIX RISING WROTE:
[Does anyone know anything about the direction in which European sympathies toward the rebels have turned since 9/11?]

There has been a /huge/ shift in British sympathies toward the FARC. (At least at the official gubbermint level). But, it goes back further than 9/11.

[They've always been somewhat tolerant of the FARC, but most of the European news sources I read]

There's the problem right there. European news is more liberal than the American counterpart. First, it's biased. Second, it's not very deep. Don't pay too much attention to mainstream media. Use the internet to find sources who are plugged into whatever subject you find interesting.

[Is this a conscious decision to avoid criticism in American media and government, or has the FARC actually receded in the eyes of Europe? Or am I completely wrong and simply looking at the wrong sources?]

Definitely wrong sources. Do a search on "IRA bomb makers caught in Colombia" and that should point you in the correct direction. Then, think of how the Colombians would pay back the IRA.

Two hints: it goes beyond payment of money/cocaine/arms and the two terrorist groups did /not/ trade info. The IRA provided bomb making expertise to the FARC.

I'll hold your hand a bit further: If you were the IRA and wanted to continue to harass the British gubbermint, what would you ask the FARC to do? When you find the answer to that, then you'll understand what the British gubbermint is very worried about.

Good luck, Phoenix Rising.
