The news is reporting it was a "Circo del Sol" show.  If that is the Latin American version of Cirque Du Soleil, and they use the same format, then the clowns do not actually have speaking roles.  If so, they may be considered Mimes, and come on, be honest, haven't we all wanted to whack a Mime now and then?  It might have been a humanitarian gesture.
