Subject: WaPo compares Glenn Beck to Father Coughlin (a variation of right-wingers killed the Kennedys)

I was at gas station yesterday and saw the Washington Post had a big front-page story ? "In Today's Viral World, Who Keeps a Civil Tongue?" Not a bad idea for a story in theory, but given that the article was accompanied by photos of, among others, Father Coughlin* and Glenn Beck ? my immediate thought was, "What do you want to bet that story is wildly unbalanced and unfair to conservatives?" Well, it turns out you can judge a newspaper by its cover.

*Father Coughlin is always invoked as a bogeyman by the Left when discussing political discourse ? and somehow they always forget to mention he was a socialist attacking Roosevelt from the left. The Post does at least mention that Coughlin was a one-time Roosevelt supporter, but neglects to mention what Coughlin's vitriolic rants were really about. With the way the story is written, it's hard to tell whether the Post is directly suggesting or sloppily eliding that Coughlin's rhetoric is similar to today's Tea Party sentiment. The Post notes that the New Deal was "perceived as invasive federal power" because Roosevelt had "closed the banks in an effort to pry the country out of the Depression and established the sweeping safety net of the New Deal," and then lumps Coughlin in with that particular brand of anti-FDR sentiment. The reality is that Coughlin began opposing Roosvelt because he thought he was being pupeteered by capitalistic Jewish bankers. And I seriously doubt that a guy who said "We maintain the principle that there can be no lasting prosperity if free competition exists in industry," had a problem with federal intervention. But you know this already because you've read Liberal Fascism, right?

Haven't read it yet, but thinking seriously about doing it, once I finish Theodore Rex.  What can I say? TR is the man.

I find it interesting that it's my liberal friends, not my conservative ones, who are convinced JFK and RFK were killed by everybody but Lee Harvey Oswald and Sirhan Sirhan.  Most of the rest of us have, to coin a phrase, moved on.

I think Glenn Beck is a bit of a loon, but to include him with Fr. Coughlin is disgusting.

I've not watched or listened to a single Glenn Beck broadcast. I've listened to Rush Limbaugh, once, for about 10 minutes. Nonetheless, I like the way they're breaking down conservatism into bite-sized pieces for mass audiences. Leftists on TV are nuts (this includes the entire spectrum of entertainment and news, including most parts of the Fox channels), but they do get their message across pretty convincingly, to their audiences. If I had to choose between a right wing TV personality who crosses his t's and dots his i's, but is boring and unwatchable, and a right wing TV personality who's a few cards short of a full deck, but is interesting and charismatic, I'd choose the latter.

I flipped through Glenn Beck's addition to Common Sense, and I think he makes some good points.  Hell, he makes some good points on his show.  (Yes, I've watched it a few times.)  The problem is that his good points get lost in the frothing screaming.  He undoubtedly knows that's what his viewers want to see is him coming completely unglued.  Granted, I think Obama does things that genuinely does make Beck come unglued.  All that aside, I've never heard Rush or Beck state that they'd like to see a political opponent dead--as Chris Matthews did today, or as Rachel Maddow has in the past.

I think Bill O'Reilly is a terrific writer, but I would never go on his show.  I'd have to slap him in the face.  He never lets anyone finish, even when they're agreeing with him! Hannity at least tends to know when to shut up and let the other person finish a complete sentence.

Does this count?

Clear Channel radio host Glenn Beck said he was "thinking about killing [filmmaker] Michael Moore" and pondered whether "I could kill him myself, or if I would need to hire somebody to do it," before concluding: "No, I think I could. I think he could be looking me in the eye, you know, and I could just be choking the life out -- is this wrong?"

From the May 17 broadcast of The Glenn Beck Program:

BECK: Hang on, let me just tell you what I'm thinking. I'm thinking about killing Michael Moore, and I'm wondering if I could kill him myself, or if I would need to hire somebody to do it. No, I think I could. I think he could be looking me in the eye, you know, and I could just be choking the life out -- is this wrong? I stopped wearing my What Would Jesus -- band -- Do, and I've lost all sense of right and wrong now. I used to be able to say, "Yeah, I'd kill Michael Moore," and then I'd see the little band: What Would Jesus Do? And then I'd realize, "Oh, you wouldn't kill Michael Moore. Or at least you wouldn't choke him to death." And you know, well, I'm not sure.

Need to read the whole context.

Besides after seeing the product produced by Mister Moore, I find that man to be exactly what he resembles and claims falsely to hate, a fat fascist pig.
