Subject: What if the EU Arms Embargo on China were lifted and...

...The UK and China co-developed an alternative to the F-35 and cooperated on a Carrier design. Both nations seem to have converging interest here IMO considering the recent rift over the F-35. Would it be possible to overcome the ideological differences? Would it be feesible? Would it be a good Idea for UK/China? What would the US Reaction be? Thanks DA

What exactly could the Chinese give in this partnership?

Nah.. more likely China buys a modified Rafale M that can be launched without a steam cat.

I agree with Yimmy here. China has nothing to offer such a partnership. They can't currently design even a good fourth-generation fighter -- the J-10 is still dependent on Russian engines, for example. And they have no experience with carriers, other than a 60-year-old British one and a Russian hulk. If the UK pulls out of the F-35 program then they will either buy Rafale M's or a navalized Eurofighter. There are already contingency plans to navalize the Typhoon in case the F-35 collapses. And since the new UK carriers share a lot of commonality with the future French one, which will be CTOL, there's no reason to think the British couldn't change the CVF design to use catapults. Incidentally, I don't buy the idea that any European nation would use a ski ramp on a CTOL carrier. They have the technology to make catapults work, and the benefits of catapults are too compelling not to use them if you can.

I am still not convinced the UK will pull out of the JSF program. Seems to me most of the comments in the press are designed to be negotiation tricks and political points.

The UK and France might hold their noses and go in with China on a Carrier Strike Force development program if China overtook the US in research funding and was making progress anyway*. I can imagine it would be effectively a patent free zone based on China's track record, but that could be worked around easier than a nest of secrecy and exclusion. *=Not likely in the imediate future, but maybe one day.
