Softwar    2/27/2007 12:33:40 PM
PARIS, Feb 16, 2007 (AFP) - Plans to build a second aircraft-carrier for the navy were at the heart of France's presidential election campaign Friday after Socialist candidate Segolene Royal said she would scrap the vessel in order to invest in education.

Already discussed .She has said that in a demagogic action to please to leftist.
Then she went back saying that it would be the case if a choice have to be made.
Then she said that she would not diminish budget of defense and consider if we need really a carrier. And if it is the case it should be done in a European framework (hey -we are already doing it with british and no chance EU budget pay for it - LOL)
And her advisor for defense says recently in defense publications (and in the tenth page of some serious newspapers) that no decision to cancell it has been made.
So for the mass of her voter, she is a pacifist which will give priority to education, then for those less numerous on left who are also concerned by national security that she will keep France secure by not dimishing really defense effort, and for people who are really following defense issues, her advisor said that nothing is decided and they will review program defenses but without diminishing global budget.
Marketing segmentation or demagogy at its best?

Sounds similar to our leading Dem candidate here in the US.  Play to the left for your base but declare yourself in the center/right to get the vote.
I certainly hope that its not true or does not happen after (if) she is elected.
