  While the Sadr militia left the shrine in Najaf, in Kufa, where another Islamic shrine is located, unknown men attacked peaceful demonstrators with mortars and guns, killing 27 and wounding hundreds. The attackers are thought to be followers of Sadr, or Saddam Hussein (some Sunni Arab gunmen are still active in the south.)
