Syria Under Siege

September 18, 2007:  Israel has still not admitted what it's F-15s were bombing in northern Syria on September 6th. Syria complained bitterly, the media speculated and the government said nothing. This caused a spike in popularity polls for Israeli officials, which may have been the main objective of the operation. There are plenty of targets in Syria, like shipments of weapons for Hizbollah, or new Russian anti-aircraft missile systems. Nuclear weapons were also mentioned. But it's all speculation, and all that Israeli officials will talk about is the Israeli ability to hit their enemies anywhere, at any time.

In Gaza,  Hamas continues attacking public demonstrations by Fatah supporters. Hamas is under the spotlight here, and would lose much of the little international support it has, if it came down hard on the local Fatah opposition (by killing Fatah supporters until that support went deep underground). Meanwhile, the Hamas supporters in the West Bank, more outnumbered than Fatah is in Gaza, have kept their heads down.   Israeli raids are being conducted into southern, as well as northern, Gaza.  Israeli intelligence officials believe Hamas is planning a major terror attack against Israel before the end of the year. Hamas has to do something. It is losing control in Gaza, is impotent in the West Bank, and outside help is slow in coming. Unwilling to back down on its pro-terrorist politics, Hamas apparently wants to move forward with its call for the destruction of Israel.

In Lebanon, police continue to hunt down and arrest Palestinian and Syrian terrorists who escaped the siege  near Tripoli. Several dozen terrorists hid in the bombed out town after the siege ended, or managed to slip away. But the terrorists have little local support, and are being turned in by civilians. The police are particularly interested in the Islamic terrorists from Syria, who were apparently the chief proponents of the violence that led to the siege. Three of these Syrians have been captured in the last week. Lebanon already has the UN closing in on Syrians who were assassinating Lebanese politicians, and now this.  But that's not the only problem in Syria. In 2003, Syria was quick to provide sanctuary for Iraqi officials fleeing war crimes prosecution for Saddam era misdeeds. At first, it was only the wealthy government officials. But in the last year, thousands of low level operatives, and many more Sunni Arabs fleeing  growing Shia anger against all Sunnis because of terror attacks, have crowded into Syria. There are now over a million of these Iraqi refugees in Syria. Most of these Iraqis are poor, and Syria has not got the resources to deal with the problem. So, just like hordes of Palestinian refugees eventually  destabilized Lebanon and triggered a long civil war, Syria fears the same fate.  To the average Syrian, the problems on the ground are far more threatening than Israeli F-15s overhead.

Here is a bot of the scuttlebutt I've picked up.  Take it or leave it, it could be completely incorrect:

1. Israel inserted commandos on the ground in the Syrian Eastern Desert.  They went in and took out the ground based radars for the Russian-made Pantsyr AAMs.

2. When the Syrians were caught with their Pantsyrs down (ha!), the IAF hit two targets in Syria proper: One, a depot with long-range SSMs just in from Iran.  The second, a depot housing components for nuclear warheads that got shipped into Latakia from North Korea.  Seems the Syrians weren't interested in building centrifuges and shipping in Russian technicians like their masters, the Iranians did; they simply bought materials from the NorKs, and were gettign ready to assemble them.

3. Israel used Turkish airspace, and Turkish intel, to transit to and from the target areas.

4. Israel's military is on the highest level of alert, and troops have not been allowed to go home for Rosh Hashana and will not go home for Yom Kippur.  Israeli Combat Air Patrols have been increased, and additional aircraft are sitting on tarmacs, fully combat loaded, on Ready 5 alerts, ready to take to the skies.

5. Syria's Assad had a nasty little meeting with his brother-in-law and his top generals, and their message was that if Assad does not strike back at Israel for this attack, then Assad will be taken out behind the palace and shot.  The Syrian military has also mobilized, and there is quite a lot of activity on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights and all throughout the Syrian area near the Israeli border.

6. Israeli undercover agents infiltrated the Gaza Strip on donkey carts, dressed as Arabs, and got close enough to one of the Big Bad Boys to grab him, call in a chopper, and spirit him back into Israel proper.  They are currently engaged in "heated discussions" with the young man on a variety of topics.

More of these developments can be read at .

I think the hits on Syria were significant, and the repercussions are yet to be seen.  The big surprise here is Syria's seeking a nucelar weapon, and interestingly enough, China has cancelled the six-party talks on NorK nuclear disarmament.

Something huge is up, guys.  Stay tuned.  Watch for the Syrian response.  Looks like Olmert found a pair, after all.

The security establishment has announced Tuesday the highest state of alert throughout Israel over Rosh Hashana.
Military sources told Ynet that the security establishment had eight specific indications of potential terror attacks over the holiday, as well as dozens of general indications of possible shooting and rocket attacks, suicide bombings and kidnapping attempts.

2. 09/11/07, 10:35 PM Israeli Media Confirms IAF Struck Near Euphrates by Gil Ronen
(IsraelNN.com) Israeli TV Channel 1 said Tuesday that the IDF "definitely carried out an attack" against Syria last Thursday. The attack was meaningful, the channel's military affairs reporter said, and was probably carried out against a large and important target that justified taking this kind of extreme action at such a sensitive time in Israeli-Syrian relations.
The target hit was in the Deir Ez-Zour region in eastern Syria, near the Euphrates river.
The attack was carried out by Israel Air Force (IAF) F-15i jets (The 'i' stands for 'Israel') referred to in Hebrew as Ra'am, or 'thunder.' Anti-aircraft fire from the ground was inefficient, Channel 1 said. "Israeli propaganda"
Syria denies a report by CNN that IDF ground troops also participated in the operation. "This is absolutely not true," Syria's ambassador to the UN, Bashar al-Jaafari said.
He claimed the report is Israeli propaganda aimed at conveying the perception that Israel can insert ground troops anywhere it wants. "Israel is seeking military escalation," he said. "We are exerting efforts so that we don't fall into this trap. We are dealing with the matter with utmost keenness, precision and responsibility."

'Advisors to Assad pressuring him to respond with force'
By JPOST.COM STAFF
Advisors to Syrian President Bashar Assad are pressuring him to respond to the alleged IAF attack by "landing a blow to an Israeli target," the Kuwait-based Al-Jareeda reported Wednesday. According to the report, Israel targeted long-range missile batteries that were brought to Syria from Iran. The report said five IAF fighter jets carried out the attack.
Israel Radio quoted the Kuwaiti paper to the effect that the group advocating a military response is being spearheaded by Assad's brother in law, who has met in recent days with senior Hizbullah and Hamas officials in an effort to draw up an operation plan.
The Kuwaiti paper also reported that the Syrian army has begun drafting reservists from the armed corps, missile corps and anti-aircraft units, and quoted "sources in the know" who said the draft was a response to Israel raising its level of readiness in the north.

I hope Israel goes to war against the regime in Syria. I wouldn't mind another tin-pot dictator suffering grief because of American-made weapons used by the Israelis.

The Pantsyr is a system that does not depend on other radars .  A single vehicle, tracked or wheeled, carries 30 mm cannon, missiles, radar, optical & thermal fire control.  Imagine an Avenger on 'roids.
Although the Pantsyr does not depend on other radars, they are still better with them than without.  A vehicle could stay concealed until the moment of firing  if it does not have to activate its own radar to find targets.

The whole PANTsIR angle is just goofy.  There's no way that's the reason Israel bombed something in Syria.  It's just not that big a deal whether Syria even has a few new short-range, low-altitude SAM systems or not.  It wouldn't be something to risk this sort of action over.

Israeli attempt to provoke retaliation from Syria/Hizbollah. Seen it before.

The silence from the Syrian is even more revealing about their shame at their evil deeds being discovered. And the protests of the North Koreans would confirm their latest scheme or effort to milk their nuclear technology.

I had thought that this raid was another strike from Israel at hizbollah or to punish Syria.

Now one wonders is Iran going to be next? Anything to do with the threats of war from France?
