Overview/BackgroundThis is a World War II simulation, albeit in an alternate time line. The Point of Departure (POD) involves the Lusitania – it arrives safely, and thus Germany is able to pursue unrestricted submarine warfare to victory in World War I.ManualsPrimarily online documentation. A manual and voice command card are provided. There is a registration code that needs to be used to run the game.SystemThis game is a naval simulation’s equivalent to a first-person shooter. It will appeal more to a person familiar with Doom or Counterstrike than it appeals to those interested in strategy and/or tactics.Game FeaturesThe game currently only has a single-player mode. There is an interactive web site which has provided a timeline (currently through 1916). Online multi-player arrived in March.Lessons LearnedFirst of all, first-person simulators are hard to play, particularly when one is more experienced with the traditional war games. It does show how primitive air defense still was in the 1930s. The same goes for submarine warfare and anti-submarine warfare. It does provide some appreciation for the difficulties faced in World War II.SummaryThis game is more of a first-person shooter than it is a real historical simulation. That said, it does provide some historical perspective. The graphics are amazing, and it teaches a lot about what naval warfare in the World War II timeframe was like. This is highly recommended for those who enjoy first-person shooters or naval warfare. It could also serve as a gateway into historical wargames. |
