The US Navy is scrambling to find ways to save some portion of their Navy Theater Wide anti-missile system. Pentagon officials are trying to find $2.4 billion in cuts from the overall missile defense program, and the Army THAAD system (being ahead of the NTW in development) seems likely to get most of the available money. THAAD (after several failures) scored two hits in recent tests, while the Navy system has yet to take a shot at a live target. The Navy system uses a Standard SM-3 missile with a Lightweight Exoatmospheric Projectile guided by an upgraded Aegis radar system. --Stephen V Cole
