The Army Special Forces Command is starting work on a miniature 20kw airborne chemical oxygen iodine laser. This is a smaller version of the Air Force's YAL-1A anti-ballistic missile laser. The Army's new laser will be used to shoot down cruise missiles and destroy targets on the ground. The five-year development program will cost $250 million. --Stephen V Cole
