The war on terror is taking a relatively heavy toll on the CIA. So far, the CIA has lost five people (two employees, one person on loan from another agency and two contractors.) All the losses have been in Afghanistan. Since it was formed in 1947, the CIA has lost 83 people in action. The CIA does not release data on how many people it has out in harms way, but its thought to be several hundred. The U.S. Army Special Forces, on the other hand, have several thousand operators in Afghanistan and Iraq, and have lost about two dozen people so far. Like the CIA, most Special Forces losses have been in Afghanistan.
