One custom in U.S. Army units that has not been put to the test yet is "selective de-masking." After a real, or imagined, chemical attack appears to be over, it's time to remove gas masks and get on with the war. The newly announced procedure is that the most junior member of each unit will take off their mask first, and, as a practical matter, see if it's safe.
