The US Navy is asking contractors for options to develop a new third-generation forward-looking infrared radar and electro-optical sensor that would equip new and refurbished MH-60 SeaHawk helicopters. This would be an improvement over the current system, and the Navy wants it to include a laser designator for Hellfire and other air-to-ground weapons. To save money, the Navy wants it to fit in the same space as the current system and use the same software. The Navy wants to buy 180 of these (with the first helicopter equipped with it flying in 2005) but is waiting to see if any contractor thinks it can deliver.--Stephen V Cole
