British Army Brigadier Pat Lawless (deputy head of the new tri-service helicopter command) resigned abruptly on 27 Jan, saying he could not remain in the Army due to the decision to allow homosexuals to serve openly in the ranks. British military spokesmen said that the change was forced on the Army by the European Court of Human Rights but that the service chiefs are determined to make the new policy work.--Stephen V Cole
