Since World War II, the United States has stationed thousands of troops in some pretty grim locations. Isolated islands, Antarctica and, especially, South Korea. For most of that time, troops were given a small monthly bonus for this "hardship" duty. Currently enlisted personnel get $22.50 a month. Finally, in recognition of how unpopular such duty is, the "hardship duty" pay will go up to a maximum $150 a month.
