In an effort to hang on to experienced, and useful, old soldiers, the Department of Defense is planning to change the rules so that some officers and NCOs can stay in uniform for 40 years, and retire with a pension equal to their active duty pay. The maximum age for active service would be increased to 68 (but the troops would still have to continue passing their physical.) Some exceptional individuals would be allowed to serve until age 72.
