Analysis of three-year-old data has shown that a comet (now designated K2) passed through the solar system between May and July of 1997 and no one noticed. Based on its brightness, it would have been spotted if anyone had happened to train a reasonably powerful home telescope at it. Scientists say this underscores the need to build a tracking system to detect possible threats to Earth.--Stephen V Cole
