CHINA has told Russia that it wants to buy 20 Su-27UB combat-capable two-seat ctrainer aircraft for advanced pilot training. Due to its long range, the Chinese have chosen the Russian Su-27 as their premier superiority fighter. It has the range to cover the Chinese border from relatively few bases, and has long enough legs to cover any future military operations around the Spratly Islands. --Stephen V Cole
