Furious that the US House of Representatives voted to increase military ties to Taiwan, the Chinese military bluntly warned the US on 4 Feb that "China is not Yugoslavia and Taiwan is not Kosovo". The House voted on 1 Feb to formalize military contacts with Taiwan, bring more Taiwanese to US military academies, and require the Pentagon to issue a formal report each year on threats to Taiwan. The Senate has yet to act on the measure and the White House has threatened a veto. --Stephen V Cole
