China was bluntly warned Taiwan that it will be keeping score when new Taiwanese President Chen Shui-Bian gives his inaugural speech on 20 May. If he accepts the one-China formula, then Beijing will work on improving relations. If he ignores the issue, the present stalemate will continue. But if he calls for independence or even refers to Taiwan as a separate country, the Chinese government's Taiwan Affairs Office says this will amount to "sacrificing the 23 million Taiwan residents".--Stephen V Cole
