The police arrested known or suspected dissidents in the days prior to the 11th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square demonstration. Over 1,300 people were arrested to avoid any anti-government demonstrations. The government downplayed the anniversary this year, as in the past it had celebrated it as an example of the state maintaining order. Today, more arrests were made and several attempted demonstrations broken up.
