In indication of how pervasive corruption is can be found in the $27 billion Three Gorges dam project. So far, over a hundred officials have been convicted to corruption in connection with money spent on the dam. One official has been executed and many more received long prison sentences. The corruption associated with the dam project has caused much public unrest in the Three Gorges area.
