Secretary of State Powell visited China to glad hand and prepare the way for a presidential visit later. There was one ugly, and revealing, incident. Powell agreed to do a live interview on Chinese television, but only if the Chinese were willing to run it uncut. The Chinese reneged, and cut comments about human rights abuses and Taiwan. Powell protested.
