The Abu Sayyaf rebels on Basilan left the jungle and seized a hospital and church in the Christian populated area of Basilan. The army quickly surrounded the rebels, who had meanwhile taken another twenty hostages. But later in the day, five of the original hostages untied themselves and escaped. The government also reported that an Abu Sayyaf leader was killed in a nearby village. Army casualties have been heavy, with six dead and over forty wounded.
