US troops on Basilan have been popular with the locals, with many calling for the American soldiers to stay beyond their scheduled July departure date. The US troops are training Filipino soldiers and building public works (roads, water supplies and the like.)
Another clash with Abu Sayyaf on Basilan left four soldiers wounded. Several rebels were thought to be wounded, but all the rebels escaped.
