Do four years in an Airborne Infantry unit.
Accept the fact that the basics, however dry and uninteresting they seem, are important and excel at them: max your PT tests, qualify expert with your assigned weapon; get your Expert Infantry Badge; make Sergeant/E-5.
As you start getting closer to the end of your hitch, say the last year, begin to give more attention to land navigation, ruck marching and swimming. The advice on professionalsoldiers.com seems to be pretty good.
Re-enlist for SFAS.
A lot of times I wish I had.
And if you are preparing for SFAS remember that a person,
provided they maintain a good baseline of fitness
, can be brought to an absolute peak in six to eight weeks of hard training. Fight trainers knew this for decades before most other coaches accepted it. Try to go 100% at something year round and you will eventually over train and either injure yourself or regress. Fight trainers knew that decades before most other coaches as well, although it was more of an instinctual or intuitive knowledge instead of a scientific one, i.e. a fighter "went stale."

Let me offer a little clarification on the last paragraph of my previous post.
After reading it again it seems that the paragraph sort of rambles along without coming to a point. The point I was trying to make is this: you don't want to find yourself "going stale" a couple of weeks before you're scheduled to go to SFAS because you trained too hard for too long without a break. You would probably want to time your last training cycle so that you "peak" while you're in SFAS.
