Subject: Racist?
SCCOMarine    6/14/2008 9:08:21 PM
I don't know if any of you have heard this but apparently the Corps is in hotwater over a new recruitment commercial being racist. Bringing up an old debate of whether the Marines veiw minorities as being of lesser quality than whites. I finally saw it, could see where ppl who are looking for something could make a stretch but really thought it was a good commercial. Especially after reading it the actual story of the Marine featured in it. But after this it will probably never see air time. But here it is you can judge for yourself. What a joke. The only racists here are the ones who considered that video to be racist. It's those people who look at a clearly insperatinal video like that and only notice the colour of the mans skin.

How are we supposed to get past racisim if PC do-gooders keep making big deals out of things like that?

Yeah I think its Activist groups who don't want black youth or any youth for that matter to join the "evil military complex" so they wage their Media Insurgency and use hit & run smear tactics to try and weaken any good argument for joining the Military.

I think the Vietnam era vets could probably speak best to it.

It is a good commercial. Only people that cannot get over the color of peoples skin have a problem with it. Basically liberals who see everything through the lens of race

I can see where some people suggesting a racial issue are coming from in the nature in which the add "apparently" tackles an issue regarding African Americans and swimming, but personally agreed that the advert was more inspirational than anything else. Additionally, if there is a wide issue with swimming, isn't it better that is be addressed and depicted that the Corps will help its people with it? (Perceptions of swimming - or anything else- should not be allowed to prevent willing youths from establishing a career and bettering themselves through a vehicle, in this case the Corps)

The leftist media and other anti-military groups out there will leave no stone unturned in their attempts to bash the military.  Anyone that has spent enough time with black people, especially in an urban setting, knows that they tend to be weak swimmers.  The reasons for this are socio-economic, and have nothing at all to do with blacks being in any way inferior to whites or any other racial group.  Black people that participated in aquatic activities as children and attended swim lessons can swim just as well as members of any other racial group, but in many urban neighborhoods swimming pools are few and far between, and therefore learning to swim would be seen as unnecessary and a waste of money.

The fact that the commercial is based upon a true story should mean something, but the critics and race baiters won't allow themselves to be confused by the facts.  I'm sure the Marines targeted this ad towards potential recruits of all races that may be hesitant to join the Marines because they can't swim.  Unfortunately, however, it has become taboo to discuss an issue if it any way attributes any sort of a perceived negative characteristic to a particular race.  People talk a lot about an open discussion on race in this country, but some people seem intent on maintaining the status quo and not moving forward.  There's simply too much money involved in continuing to stir the pot and convince people that this is a racist nation.  I hope the Marines hold their ground, but I doubt they will.

You know, as simple and straight foward as that sounds, why can't it be that simple.

When I 1st started blasting some blogs last week, my defense of the commercial was race centric b/c their arguments were.  But f*ck it, why can't it be that simple.
