Subject: What Army has the best camouflage pattern for their uniforms?
Schackleford    2/1/2006 10:24:28 AM
I myself think MARPAT would provide real good cover in the intended terrain (I am a lot more pessimistic about the US Army's ACU pattern). But other then that what are good camouflage patterns? And what patterns are just plain cool looking? :-)

Secondly and most importantly Camo DOES NOT WORK IF YOU ARE MOVING!!!
A little off the original topic, but related: does anyone think that a solid, provided it's a good match for the area, can be harder to pick out than a pattern if the wearer is moving?

I'm not suggesting by any means that a solid is foolproof for movement.  Any movement draws the eye, of course.  It's just that it seems to me that a solid is at least a little better for movement, especially if it's a slow movement directly at the observer, than a pattern.

IIRC, early in Vietnam units like Project Delta loved tigers but later in the war SOG RTs almost always wore OGs on missions.  In fact, I've read that tigers were sometimes embroidered and saved for wear around base as a "profile suit."

Slightly related. During the ACW ships runing the naval blockade into Confederate ports painted their upper works in a light grey, some almost white. Black was tried initially (they were runing at night) but the palest grey worked best.

It would seem to reduce the prominence of the sillouette against the sky

IMO, for woodland patterns, sgreens aren't especially important and can become a liability. Better to have shades of brown and gray. You always have browns and greys in any forest, whether it is conifer or deciduous. Woodland patterns with strong greens really stick out in a desciduous forest in the fall if there are no evergreen trees or shrubs. If you are going to include greens make them muted, or a small part of the pattern.

Hadn't heard of it before. Thanks. The original pattern strikes me as pretty good for just about anything except snow and sandy desert.

This was interesting : >

that's all well and good [quite impressive really] but i was not of the thinking that sofas of this variety were a mainstay background in the various areas of the world.
as for BL's caption contest... Beth was dismayed to find Frank had yet again left his boots on the sofa, and further confused that a 2 foot wide area running the length of the sofa was missing the white flowers from the rest of the pattern.

If I were a bit more cynical i'd say the best urban cammo would be whatever locals in the area wear!

The ACU has been out for a couple of years now - is anybody feeling more generous towards it than you did originally?
To me it still seems too green for deserts, brown Fall or Winter grasslands, mostly rocky areas, etc.
