Subject: AMPHIBIOUS OPERATIONS: Keeping the Marines at Home

I'm really not sure how I feel about this. I just get the sense that it is a bad idea, and if the US is that hard-up for money, then things are a lot worse than we are being told. Considering the sailing times, unless the Navy starts deploying HSV's big-time, I just can't envision how it is "faster" to get to the Gulf from either coast than from, say, the Indian Ocean. Having been on a number of floats, I fully understand the hardships involved, but I can't justify or accept what I see as a strategic retreat for all the wrong reasons. The Corps has usually been in a position to strike from the sea when and where it was needed; I can't think of more than a handful of times when that was not the case. All in all, I don't see this as a positive thing.

One of several worrisome trends emerging from the brain trust at Quantico. I have a nasty suspicion this will lead to more "fly away" deployments, which in turn assumes host nation support, which renders the Corps obsolete.

According to the MC times, its only for 1 MEU cycle. The navy needs time to chip paint before they go out again. Because of afganistan and iraq, yardwork has been pushed back and some unscheduled repairs are needed. It was true in saying that no more ARGs will deploy. ESGs (EWGs?) are the new term.

Sam: Any scuttlebutt about "transformation" coming the Marines and changing into a brigade based force?

Nope. The COrps is now building up into an ESG (Expeditionary Strike Group). Basically, you take a CVBG an cross it with an ARG and then wait nine months and you have your self a new task force. As far as fly away units go - thats for our Army brothers to do - ie Stryker BDE. US National Security guys still want a foce of presence that they can show off and threaten aroun dthe world. The Corps is not going anywhere soon. S/F
