There is a lot of internal opposition to these changes - but largely from field and senior officers who of course see their promotion prospects dwindling as the number of large units declines. The contrast with the Royal Marines is fascinating - they are now purely light assault units specialising in marine combat with their own integral Special Force component: Obviously heavier support elements are provided but these are on quasi-permanent detachment from the British Army - notably field artillery and vehicle-mounted anti-air and anti-tank batteries.
