Subject: .50 MG on Marine copters
Dushan    4/4/2004 1:29:59 AM
Is it me or do US Marine Copters (Ch-53 and CH-57) always carry .50 MG's? Why do they carry those over the M-60? And why are helicopters still with the M-60? It has been described as extremely unreliable, shouldn't it be replaced with the M-204?

As quoted by a Vietnam helo vet (USMC 3 star) to me on this subject, you need at least .50 cal to seriously knock things down in a hot LZ. NAVAIR is working hard to retrofit a .50 cal ramp gun onto the CH-53 and V-22. CH-46s have had them in door positions for some time. UH-1s have several options including .50 cal MG, minigun or M60.

The 0.50 weapons also offer better stand-off capability than a 7.62mm weapon.
