Subject: Can not we really get married ?
gated    5/17/2004 4:42:36 AM
I have been engaged for a year with a MSG guy who is stationed in Balkans right now. We are doing pretty good. He tells me that he is not allowed to get married until he is done ( which is next year in September ). He also tells me that he has a possiblity to get outta military 2 months sooner . So we would get married in July. I have a hard time believing it. Because he tells me that , if he stays in the military ; he will be sent to Iraq , we will not be together for a year and if he gets out he will go to Washington and has to stay there two years ( in the meantime we can get married ) . so why the heck he has to go to Washington if he gets out ? I just cant understand that. I do not want to ask him and make him feel like i do not trust him. He is sleeping on getting out and find a better job. I would appreciate if someone could help me. Thanks

If he is currently stationed overseas, yes, he cannot get married (unless you travel to the Balkans and marry him...that's another hill of beans altogether.) He can get out 2 months early by several means, among them burning up excess accrued leave. (you get 30 days of leave a year, and as you increase in rank, you tend to use less as you can't get away. Many senior officers and NCOs have in excess of 6 months of leave to use. The military will not let you spend that much time away, but they will let you take 2 months or a little more away and then you can sell back the rest.) If he stays in he will probably go to Iraq. The entire Marine Corps is cycling through that theatre, so if you haven't been there in the last 6 months, then you are probably going there in the near future. About the part on going to Washington...ask him. That is confusing, probably a break-down in communication. He may have meant he will be assigned to the Pentagon until he gets out, often a place where people go to fill out their retirement. Ask him, just say you don't understand how the military discharges people. Hope that helps, SF

There is a special rule for Marine Embassy Guards. Specifically, Marine Security Guards in the rank of Sergeant or below are NOT permitted to marry WHILE on Embassy Duty. This rule, if I remember correctly, has been in place since 1948.

Thr specific Marine Corps Orders that apply to your fiance are listed below: MCO P1326.6D Chapter 4 and append C (Checklist) b. The following agreement/statement has been entered on page 11 of the Marine’s service record book and signed: (1) Sergeants and below - "I have read and understand the contents of MCO P1326.7 Chapter 4, Appendix C,F,G,H and I. I am a volunteer. I am not married, and in accepting assignment to the Marine Security Guard Program, I agree to remain unmarried until completion of my tour on the program or until I have obtained written authorization to marry from my company commander
