Report: French firms cede high tech to Chinese intelligence in bid for new business East-Asia-Intel.com, February 13, 2009 French companies have agreed to share technology used in filtering communications with Chinese intelligence agencies in a bid to win more business, the Paris-based Intelligence Online newsletter reported Feb. 4. France Telecom is involved in Chinese intelligence agency software sharing, and French technicians will offer training to China's Public Security Department, as the domestic political police are called, the newsletter stated. French technology identifies key words in telephone conversations and allows authorities to abruptly cut off calls. According to the report, France Telecom is about to open research and development centers in Beijing and Guangzhou. The Beijing center will be at Tsinghua University, a major engineering center that in the past has produced technical leaders for Chinese intelligence services. The newsletter said French technical assistance was personally requested by Zhou Yongkang, China's chief of intelligence and security agencies. According to the report, Chinese intelligence had problems conducting security monitoring foreign communications during the Olympic Games.
