Subject: Worlds worst main battle tank in service
dexter    6/11/2011 12:30:16 PM
Hi, I know this could be a repeat post, but heck its a fun topic to discuss about... :) Which is the worlds worst main battle tank in Active service? some I could think of: 1. T-80 : with its highly unreliable turbine and thermal sights 10 years behind the western MBT's. 2. T-72 : Tough contender for #1, has a arm chewing auto loader which the T-80 lacks. 3. Arjunk : 20+ years behind schedule and requires twice the maintainence of the T-90 4. Al Khalid : Made in china, possibly out of recycled plastic. 5. Leclerc : Born a warrior but never saw battle. If you could think of more MBT's please list them....

Not fair to put LeClerc on the list.

Al Kahlid is producible for them so it works.

Arjunk is the worst.  You know it's bad if they buy T-72 so they have something that works.

T-72 is fine if you want to throw tanks at the enemy until they run out of ammo.

Updates and corrections:
Not all T-80s got the turbine.
The arm-loading-auto-loader is generally believed to be an urban myth.
I agree on you being overly harsh on the LeClerc, just because it hasn't seen combat. (But, maybe it see some action in Libya.)

My list:
1. T-55, in particular, the ones that didn't see upgrades.
2. M47
3. Centrion

All of these were built about the same time. (I believe that the Centurion was the first to be classified as a "Main Battle Tank".) Also, they are still in use by somebody, somewhere. The only reason they're kept going is that it would cost too much to replace them.

I do agree the LeClerc should be removed from the list.  The T-72's arm chewer may not be a myth,  a friend of myne
is a retired T-72 tank commander, he did say that the autloader can easily pull a persons arm if he is not careful. But there was no such case he had heard of happening, at least not in the Indian army.

In the future, I am sure Tank-Ex would be the worst tank in the world, its an offspring that comes by marrying an
Arjunk to a T-72. Making it a double failure. Here is the PIC in the below link, I think the tank shown here has a
Television Dish mounted on the top, possibly to motivate the tankers by showing  some of Arnold's movies :)
