The general concensus seems to be too little maney to do the job and too expensive to do properly. Any thoughts

I think its worth it. Aerospace has always given the best military tech, and it is a way for the World to forget our times and just imagine-like they did during the lunar race.

Well of course we all know the real reason for the US Presidents announcement of a manned mission to Mars. Not content with demonstrating to the world America's ability to conquer it anytime he feels like it, his rampantly imperialist ambitions now extend to the inner solar system as well!

And where is the UN in all this? They should be given the opportunity to set up humanitarian outposts for the destitute Martians and contribute troops for the long process of subjugating the hostile forces that we will encountered on Mars.

I personally like the idea. The US should unilaterally back out of all space treaties and begin claiming the moon and planets as sovereign territory. What's the rest of the world gonna do, point nukes at us? Like that's never happened before.

The US needs to look at the moon and mars on a timescale of about 50 years, not 3 fiscal quarters. The US can reap alot of rewards through jobs, technology, research and leadership but the beneficiaries are still not even twinkles in their parent's eyes.

Interseting idea I came across a few days ago (on a science news site I think, but I can't remember exactly which one) is that Bush and Co. may be trying to dismantle the US human spaceflight capability. First shut down the shuttle and the ISS to pay for new tech, thus pacifying those interested in space. After a few years admit the truth that the Mars expedition will be too costly to mount and so terminate the project. Why this should be so wasn't stated, but it does seem in line with the apparent hostility to human spaceflight shown by many in people in power.

Yeah, the many people in power in the US want quartlery profits, not long term gain...sad.

The space shuttle program needs to be shut down. If you want to replace it with a new system, fine. As of now, the platforms are old, tired, and expensive. Extremely expensive. ISS isn't half what it was envisioned to be, and it cost twice as much; the US bore the bulk of the financial responsibility for this floating junk heap. Why pay more?' As for a Martian journey being impossible, the Apollo space capsules had the computing power of a scientific calculater. Dont speak to me of possibilities, there are but two obstacles: money, and will.

Yeah, at least in the willpower area we should worry about China's efforts right now, not in 10 years. The government will gladly sacrifice 100s or 1000s of people to see the Chinese flag and Chinese people on the moon and Mars. Politiking has saved the shuttle again. I don't have the link but I read it in today's NYT.
