Subject: Will cargo gliders make a comeback?
thunderbug    4/26/2004 3:37:17 AM
Will cargo gliders,(upgraded of course with a GPS-guided fully automated landing systems) be a serious alternative to handle the surge airlift requirements for military crises and operations other than war? Your thoughts please?

I am just comparing gliders to parachute drops. Plus for gliders: Accurate targetting of landing site. Parachutes drift, and may land where they are inconvenient, or get hung up in a tree. With a glider, they can land right on target. Provides its own lift. If you load up a cargo plane with its entire payload, you could still tow a glider which has its own wings and carries its own load. Soldiers inside don't need to learn to jump. Well, it seems unlikely we would put soldiers in them, but it could conceivably help sometimes. Softer landing. Since it would land kind softly, packaging might be easier, there would be less loss due to damage on impact, and some more fragile items could be delivered. Minus: Hard to imagine what could be used to pull it. Very expensive compared to a parachute, but unlikely to be reusable.

A para-glider or Rogallo wing with guidance might be useful for resupply of forward units, units cut off from the outside or under siege. It would certainly make more sense to drop supplies from high altitude, out of range of MG and MANPADS, if they could be guided accurately enough to fall into the right hands. Another possibility would be an autorotating rotor. Either would be preferable to risking an plane or helicopters.

interesting idea, but any jumps the 82nd does today doesn't need gliders, the five parachutes for an lav are adequate in my oppion. a c-130 could tow a glider however if we did have them. also, LAVs could be flown in by heavy heliocpters as well

I see definetely a future for unmanned cargo gliders - avoiding the risks to glider pilots.
